Summer's here! My Summer Reading List 2014
Hello summer!
After our horrid winter, summer is finally here. Bonjour, July! I'm a bit late in posting; being that I started my summer reading in June. As you already know, I love reading. Often I may read two books simultaneously and/or read a book in one sitting. I've said it before, "I am quite a nerd." My mother would and still complains at the size of my library. Claiming that, "There is no way you have read all these books" or "Do you even remember what the books are about?" I can tell you that yes, I have read all of my books in library except for two. I will not bore you with the titles. I just couldn't finish; although, I think I may try again but...shrug? Moving on...
The development of E-readers have definitely aided my fascination. They have enabled me to get more books without using more space, all at a cheaper value. Still, I often find myself missing a real book. The weight of the bound sets. The smell of the printed pages, the cracking of the spine when I first delve into the story, the grainy feel of the sheets when you turn them to explore further more...all of this is just so alluring. So every once in a while, I get a real book and relish in the wake of it all. Recently nostalgia hit, I began to think of the days of summer youth. Remember when we were given a summer reading list to complete by summer's end? Here is my version.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
"Charlie is a freshman. And while he's not the biggest geek in school, he is by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and trying to run form it."
****I recently just finished the book and yes it was all they said it would be, I enjoyed this read.
5 Ways to Carry a Goat by Ben Groundwater
"...After posting a cry for help on his blog, he has a globe-circling itinerary of apparently friendly strangers who have offered him their homes..."
****Recently my cousin visited from his 2yr "experience." He was backpacking and living in South East Asia. As we discussed his experiences, I expressed a desire of mine. An opportunity to fully embrace a culture of a country; not like a tourist-- but like a "local." He recommended this book. Currently reading stay tuned, so far it is quite enjoyable.
The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta
"What if ---Woosh, right now, with no explanation---a number of us simply vanished."
****I know there is a show that will be airing soon, if not already. The premise intrigues me. Seems like a good read.
I'll be Home for Christmas by Zane
"Noelle Mitchell never explained why she abruptly ran away from home at the age of fifteen. All anyone knew was that her boyfriend Reno convinced her to abandon her family. But when she shows up at the family house on Christmas thirteen years later what's revealed about her absence will either tear her family further a part or bring them closer together."
****Everyone needs a good sultry, guilty pleasure. Zane never disappoints; when it comes to drama, sex and questionable morals. I'm glad our girl is back.
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
"Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has brought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten."
****This book had me at, "I fell in love the way you fall asleep slowly and then all at once." A one liner in the book plastered all over the web. How romantic! I am such a sap at times. This is one of the books that I finished in June before this post; I just had to read this before the movie came out. Definitely recommend this one!!!!
The Silent Wife by A.S.A Harrison
"Jodi and Todd are at a bad place in their marriage. Much is at stake, including the affluent life they lead in their beautiful waterfront condo in Chicago, as she, the killer and he the victim, rush haplessly toward the main event..."
****Currently also reading this one, as a recommendation from my cousin the book has me in an odd hold; it makes no sense to me but also makes complete sense. I'm not sure that made any sense but that is exactly it...totally stumped. Hopefully, I will get the gist of it by the end.
What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
"Alice Love is twenty-nine, crazy about her husband, and pregnant with her first child. So imagine Alice's surprise when she comes to on the floor of a gym (a gym! She HATES the gym) and is whisked off to the hospital where she discovers the honeymoon is truly over -- she's getting discovered, she's actually 39 years old...."
****I can't wait to get started on this one. I can't even begin to imagine such a reality. Can you imagine?
Girls in White Dresses by Jennifer Close
"Isabella, Mary, and Lauren feel like everyone they know is getting married. On Sunday after Sunday, at bridal shower after bridal shower, they coo over toasters, collect ribbons and wrapping paper, eat minuscule sandwiches and doll-sized cakes. They wear pastel dresses and drink champagne by the case, but amid the celebration these women have their own lives to contend with...."
****It is as if they are telling my story. It seems as if everyone around me are either getting married, getting pregnant, and having babies. A book I can relate to, sounds like a good book for the beach.
Well there you have it, you guys be good readers and enjoy. Looking forward to posting a Fall Book List!
