Memorial day Weekend 2013
Memorial day weekend is here and I have big plans, very important things to do. "Big plans," I tell ya! Big ones and they will be grand! As we already know-- all great things come to an...urrrrrrrrrrr screeching halt. As some of you all already know my grandmother is going through some changes. We have a nurse that comes weekly and another on the weekends. Sounds good? Would probably be just fine, if grandma didn't totally dislike the weekend gal. Not to mention the language barrier..so many issues. Sigh.... We will revisit this eventually.
Anyhoo, I was hyped. I had tickets to an art exhibit who turned out to be a Haitian artist, at a Haitian restaurant. So excited! Then I was going to the Makossa BK Cookout @ the Brooklyn Tap House. Supposedly considered, "one of the best summer soirees" in Brooklyn. I was ready! Friday night I planned my outfit accordingly -- it seems to be quite a rainy season, I haven't seen so many storms in my life. My original cute outfit went out the door with the massive winds that we were getting.
I awoke to mayhem- man down. The aid that was suppose to come in called out and therefore I had to stay with grandma. Now ordinarily this would be fine, but I plans! I was livid! I was livid at my extended family! Livid at the aid! Livid at the company providing the aid -cause you should have a stand-by. I was just pissed. After calling my uncle and he then giving me a hogwash excuse of why grandma couldn't stay a couple hours by him; I was through. At that point, I had just given up. It was just about the time for the art exhibit, calculating the commute & the search for parking I would of missed it . So I sulked to my abode and concocted another plan cause I would be damned if I truly let this mess up my weekend.
Once I got coverage for my grandma, I was out...with a slightly changed agenda. I headed to Brooklyn and was bombarded by every kind weather. Such a freaky day. It was sunny, then it was pouring, then there was ferocious winds, & then it was drizzling it was ridiculous. I made it, safely. Slowly I began my quest. See I had all the mindset to get my cousin to go out with me. I was still trying to make it to the "Makossa." I knew it was far fetched but I was going to try anyway. Long story short, I got her out of the house--hey once she was in my car...she was on my agenda. Hehehe...lol. I actually lured her out by Carvel....but we ended up La Caye restaurant. *don't hate me/wink wink*
La Caye was like no other Haitian restaurant I have ever been to, it was quaint, sleek, modern, chic and trendy. Of course I have been to other Haitian restaurant but not many are sit down, more of a take out situation or even a buffet form with only the take out option. Gone were the days of Haitian restaurant grandeur. The likes of La Detente are an extinction. Sure there is "Chez Mireille" out on the island, but you really have to travel to get to there and a bit pricey. They are all far, few and none in between.
Not to be totally detrimental to my Haitian community. They are some restaurants out there. "Mixed Notes" in Elmont, LI...which I can and usually drive right by. I have been there twice and I was not pleased. "Labadee Manor" and "Brassiere Creole" both located in Queens; but I have long given up on those two-- the service has been inconsistent and they both have become major party hubs. Now, I must stress the two mentioned above are good restaurants. I even frequent them. They just aren't my "go to's"...I much actually prefer this off the beaten path restaurant in LI that offers awesome "Frittaille."
"Frittaile" is a fried dish platter that includes choice of meat (pork, goat, or fish) plantains, sausage, marinade-battered seasoned poultry, accra- grated root vegetable that is then fried, kind of like a dumpling*?*, fried sweet yam*?*potato*?*-some root vegetable that I can not remember the name in English right now --but it is simply delicious.
I'm getting off topic...After out delicious dinner we saunter out -belly full and content. She stops for her nasty little habit that she is trying to kick. Did I mention the restaurant is directly across Brooklyn Academy of Music, which was glittered with lights catching my attention. I wondered out loud, "wonder what going on there tonight?" There was a substantial amount of people entering. A man out of the shadows states its free tonight there is a dance party going on. I was like cool, he then persisted want to get in --I know a side door. Side door I say? Of course my adventurous ass interested as to where this conversation is going. Why would I need a side door if it is free, I ask--no line he states. I own the restaurant...so you can trust me. My cousin side eyeing the guy as she puffs away. I always the adventurer -let's go.
We go around the building & arrive at a door which was indeed labeled "Stage Door." Once inside, we can clearly see this is not a entrance...smh. Yet we still going, climbing many flights of stairs, although the security guard told us that we should go in the opposite direction. We get to a landing and and the doors are locked, he is not discouraged. We finally get to a landing where the doors are opening with patrons leaving and he is like come on we need to get in when the door opens! As I look back to confirm with my cousin...this chick is down a flight a stairs still side eyeing the man. Needless to say we missed the next opening, which he goes and sneaks in!!!! He left us!
Finally after giving her a pep talk-- she is never the one to go left if told right is the way to go. You feel me...lol The door opens and we grab the opportunity & it is a dark corridor. We can see the light and the music is pumping! I"m getting hyped as a security guard rounds the corner...I was busy checking into foursquare. U.E.N.E.O *sing it like the song* She growls this is not an entrance...thinking to myself this is not going to be easy. I calmly say I know, "we just came here to see if we could get some cellular service and then I give my famous *blank stare.* By the way--- I'm sweating bullets. I am by no means a cool liar. I was the kid who planned everything to the "T" in order to get away with anything.
Security says, "oh okay, yeah your not going to get much the service in this building..it sucks." I look over to my cousin and she is giving security the look of astonishment. We did it, were in baby! **pelvic thrust**
The party was awesome, turns out-it was the 30th anniversary of Video Music Box. Remember that (showing my age) way before cable came and dominated the world with MTV & VH1. V.M.B was our only peek into music videos, it was on channel 31 @ 3pm. "Those were the days..." - Edith, Archie Bunker's wife voice. We had a blast they had videos in the background matching up with the one's and two's blasting from the speakers. I grabbed a drink and then bumped n grind, through the musical ages and people watched.
The weekend was a good weekend! *Dr Dre voice....as I crypt walk away.
